Day 6: Taking It To The Closet

Part of this 31 day series of Working With What You Have was meant to challenge my closet, forcing me to get creative with the wardrobe I already own.

And as I was deciding on the topic for my 31 day series, my good friend Katie over at It's Fun To Be A Girl invited me to come on board as a catholic fashion blogger.  They're all about sharing a message of true beauty and showing that you don't have to sacrifice modesty for style and vice versa.  I couldn't agree more, and with such perfect timing, count me in!

So let's get to it!

Our family recently did our seasonal clothes swap, which I'll share with you tomorrow!  Seeing "new" clothes in my closet (even though they were just my fall/winter clothes from last year) felt like I went on a mini shopping spree.  I had fogotten about a few cute sweaters and am now totally ready for cozy layers and fall boots!

But we do live in the desert.  Granted we're not peaking at 100 degrees like Arizona - the weather here is actually gorgeous right now, but our high each day is still in the high 70's/ low 80's.  A little warm for boots and chunky sweaters.  We still need to pull from both warm and cold weather clothes for these transitional days.  That usually means long pants and light layers....and sandals are still OK!  Which is good, given my recent toe nail debacle.

So, this is what I came up with for an almost-fall Saturday afternoon...

We met up with friends for the annual Greek Festival - I did not plan the blue and white!  The checkered shirt is a very light cotton, so I was comfortable from the morning into the afternoon.

I love how fresh the color blue and crisp white look together.  So much so that it's the color inspiration for our master bedroom!  This is the mood board we came up with a few months ago.

In our bedroom we're using a pop of green as an accent, but today I went with coral for my color pop.  If the grass weren't eating my feet, you could see that I have coral on the toes in addition to the coral bracelet.

Here's the rundown...
checkered shirt:  Old Navy
white jeans: Target
bronze belt: Old Navy
sandals: Marshall's
coral cuff: gift

Two things became painfully obvious throughout this little fashion shoot attempt.   (1) I am NOT a model and am completely awkward.  I kept telling James, "I don't know what to do with my hands!".  (2) We desperately need to cut our lawn.

I can't promise you that either of those things will improve, but If you enjoyed this style post, then I'll continue to share them once a week on the blog.  So much of what's current and applicable in home design (color schemes, prints, metallics, and even design principles ) carry over into fashion.  I think it would be fun to show how our tastes correlate between the two.

Please let me know what you think!  And tell me...who has been able to bust out the fall boots so far and who is still sweating in the heat?

  1. I love the checks and rolled sleeves. Plus I like that coordinated your top to the bracelet. I say let's see more of Deme's closet! Oh and I can't wait for Fall weather here in NM. I still wear shorts-88 last Wednesday in October.

  2. Deme, I know you secretly planned the blue and white to wear for the Greek Festival... ;).... Have we learned nothing from the movie of our people, HA! Loud and proud! ;)

I love how put together this outfit is and the coral bracelet really adds to it! I say continue to do these posts. I enjoy them!

This weekend in Central Texas, it's been in the 50's and 60's! SO NICE.... Monterey weather for sure. I FINALLY was able to bust out some jeans and a cozy sweatshirt to wear today. Sadly it's suppose to go back up to the high 70's low 80's tomorrow...sniff,sniff!

  3. It's such a cute outfit Deme. Perfect for the weather we had this past weekend. We went to the Greek festival too. I go every year with my whole family. We love it and have a great time eating Greek food and dancing (although very badly). Good job with posting every day!

Not grinning over that either. We love a good open discussion but please save anything that's not constructive for someplace else.
